Loyola Marymount vs Gonzaga: the San Francisco Dons and the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Zags already dispatched the Dons on their home court, and it is time to show the Lions what is up when they roll through Spokane.
Event: College Basketball
Team: Loyola Marymount vs Gonzaga
Date: Thursday 17 January, 2019
Game Time: 7:00 p.m. ET
LMU defeated Georgetown early in the year, and that is really the big cherry on top of the schedule that overall wasn’t that good. The Lions played two non-D1 teams, the most allowed by the new WCC scheduling. The storybook year fell apart with a nasty, nasty win to UC Riverside. WCC play hasn’t been too kind to LMU either. The Lions have lost to both Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s, and it looks like Gonzaga is going to put LMU on its first losing streak of the season. The West Coast Conference season is all of one week old – just a single game for Gonzaga and Portland – and just two unbeatens remain.
Loyola Marymount vs Gonzaga are at the top with zero losses. They collide Saturday night in San Francisco, so there will be one undefeated – provided the Zags don’t stumble at home vs. Pacific on Thursday – come Sunday morning. The Zags rolled in their lone game, a 91-48 blowout over Santa Clara. The Dons are 2-0, breaking a late tie to hold off Saint Mary’s and riding Frankie Ferrari’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 14.2 seconds left to edge Pepperdine.
Pepperdine, eighth in the preseason poll, thumped Loyola Marymount, which came in with a 12-2 record, and nearly beat USF, considered by many to be the second-best team in the WCC. Santa Clara, picked ninth in the preseason poll, handled San Diego, thought to be a top-five team. BYU, third in the preseason poll, barely dug out a road win over Pacific before getting crushed at Saint Mary’s.
